Quentin Bernard
Mechanical & Production Engineer
Quentin has been a Mechanical and Production Engineer at Lambda-X since October 2018. Graduated as an industrial engineer in mechanics and aeronautics at ISIB (Brussels), Lambda-X is the first company he works for. He is currently working as a mechanical and production engineer, being active in the mechanical design department as well as in assembly and testing.
Describe the main tasks of a mechanical engineer at Lambda-X.
Since Lambda-X is a company that develops optical systems, mechanical engineers work closely with system engineers and optical designers. Optical designers provide us with optical layouts, which are used as a basis for our designs. Then, we develop the mechanics according to the requirements, which highly depend on the sector of activity. Those specs are generally related to optical alignments, thermal expansions, vibration to be resisted, sealings etc.
I Believe that a good mechanical designer must be open-minded, curious and able to focus on the essentials.
What characterizes a good mechanical design?
My vision of being a good mechanical engineer is surely linked to my double function. I believe that a good mechanical designer must be open-minded, curious and able to focus on the essentials, while considering the different factors related to the project. Design for a production product does not have the same requirements as a space project, which are usually single-shot products. It is thus important to be able to adapt to the project’s framework, by being efficient in your design choices.
What do you like most about your job?
I particularly enjoy being part of the mechanical engineering and production teams. I like the link between the design and the field, and especially following the evolution of the project, from the mindset to the integration and testing of systems. We are also fortunate at Lambda-X to work for a multitude of different industries, which makes each project a different challenge.
