Robrecht Dewaele
Software Engineer
Robrecht Dewaele joined Verhaert Digital in 2018. His passion for computers was ignited by his father at the age of 6, playing DOS games. This evolved into unpromptedly reinstalling his father’s Windows 95 machine, so Robrecht started building his own computers soon after. At Verhaert Digital, his focus has been on the KNX project with a side dish of infrastructure.
What are your key responsibilities
as a software engineer?
Providing assistance and support wherever needed is something I thoroughly enjoy. At Verhaert Digital, this has thus far translated into using many different programming languages and technologies, ranging from C++ and Rust to Python and Javascript, teaching about Prolog or designing ontologies. On the infrastructure side, I am half of team Klaecht – Klaas and Robrecht – which supports our needs in the cloud. I also like to keep an eye on security-related matters.
Technology itsef is very rarely the limiting factor. Challenges are most often imposed by the human nature of software development.
Describe some of the technical
challenges you recently
encountered.
Technology itself is very rarely the limiting factor. Challenges are most often imposed by the human nature of software development. People have to think about and deliver on software quality, design, implementation, and documentation, all within reasonable time bounds. We recently inherited a codebase of questionable quality, which exemplifies how this can go wrong. That being said, finding bugs in a C++ compiler, or a C++ standard library implementation is quite the headscratchers.
What do you enjoy about working at Verhaert Digital?
The flexibility in Verhaert Digital’s way of working, allows me to fully and freely express how I like to work, which makes for a very good work/life balance. My colleagues are highly skilled and we all keep learning from one another on practically a daily basis. Working remotely on a full-time basis (by design) requires high levels of trust. While demanding, this is also very empowering and motivating. It adds a level of ownership and pride to the quality of our work.
